On July 15 through 18, 2005 SECME, Inc. (formerly the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering) held its annual summer institute at North Carolina A&T to promote science, math, technology, and engineering amongst high school and middle school students of color.
This year Mr. Solomon Comissiong and Mr. Mark Branch, both from Washington DC, were brought in to speak about hip hop history & culture, education, and the marriage between the two. They discussed, among other things, their upbringing and how they used their love for hip hop to attain high levels of success and to accost their academics with vigor and energy. They emphasized the importance of education and showed students how to truly see their great academic, personal, and civic potential through creative use of their extracurricular interests, mainly hip hop culture.
Comissiong and Branch have used the history and culture of hip hop to motivate students throughout the Eastern seaboard, and say they are willing to travel to other parts of the country to help students gain the confidence in themselves needed for success. They can be reached by e-mail at scmbconsulting@hotmail.com, or by telephone at (202) 431-0734.
